The Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) Joint Programme is a joint R&D funding activity by 23 European Member States and Associated States, with the financial support of the European Community based on article 169 of the EC treaty.

AAL Joint Programme Objectives

The overall objective of the programme is to enhance the quality of life of older people and strengthen the industrial base in Europe through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The motivation of the new funding activity is in the demographic change and ageing in Europe, which implies not only challenges but also opportunities for the citizens, the social and healthcare systems as well as industry and the European market. The understanding of AAL is that it aims to extend the time people can live in their preferred environment.

Duration & Funding

The AAL Joint Programme is initially a six-year funding programme (2008 – 2013), with a planned total budget of 600 M€, of which 50% is public funding and 50% private funding from the participating organisations. The public funding consists of contributions of the national programmes of the AAL Partner States and that of the European Community, with a financial contribution amounting to a maximum of 150 M€ for the duration of the AAL Joint Programme.

Luxembourg joined the AAL Programme in 2008, committed an annual funding amount of EUR 600,000 and participates with two funding organisations: FNR which committed EUR 300,000 and will be coordinating the funding within the public sector and Luxinnovation, who also committed EUR 300,000 and will be coordinating the funding within the private sector.
