Summary
The BASICS project focuses on the following three main research questions: (1) which factors are involved within the process of school dropout? (2) What competences do youngsters without a leaving certificate lack? (3) Which basic competences are however necessary for reinsertion and / or further formation? (3) Based upon the results of the former two research areas, how should an appropriate remediation tool for non qualified youngsters look like? The investigations will be made with a population of “internal” and “external” school dropouts. The former do represent those pupils at the leave of school without any certification, the latter represent youngsters having already left school without any certification that are still followed by educators.
The control groups consist of samples of same aged adolescents attending school regularly without major school problems. Investigation tools, such as questionnaires and interview forms, will be based upon theoretical and empirical knowledge issued from an international literature review as well from interviews with the local professionals (i.e. headmasters, teachers, educators and company leaders). Furthermore, research results on the school dropout factors and the necessary basics competences for professional and educational reinsertion as well as for life long learning will be concerted so to develop a remediation tool for future use.
Research results: In 2009 our research team focussed on the investigations within Luxembourg’s high schools (teachers and pupils) to picture the existing problems within the sample population. Previous qualitative data from investigations on educators and company leaders, as well as international empirical results on school dropout were taken into account to generate our interview structure. In line with this, we assessed the following main factors within structured interviews: (1) school history and orientation processes, (2) relations to the teachers — class climate, (3) family relations and social economic status, (4) peer relations and leisure time organisation, (5) questions concerning the adolescent (i.e. perceived causes of school failure, critical life events, motivation). Our results mirror previous findings on the multidimensionality of the school dropout process and generated a questionnaire to be validated for the large scale surveys planned in Luxembourg’s high schools in 2010. The future findings on Luxembourg’s school dropouts will then be complemented with a remediation tool that will take into account empirical data from professionals within Luxembourg’s (further) formation sector.
