Application of Arts Therapies to Some Crucial Problems of our Society

Summary

The aim of the project consists in studying the cognitive, emotional and motivational disturbances linked to different kinds of developmental or clinical problems (highly gifted underachievers, elderly people confronted to the crisis of third age or suffering from different degrees of dementia, adults psychiatric patients) and in evaluating the efficiency of arts therapies in these realms. The methodological research is focused on fundamental and applied research in mathematics and statistics and on the development and clinical validation of new rating scales for projective and expressive tests and of pertinent observational frames for the arts psychotherapeutic sessions.

The first part of the theoretical and methodological research was presented in August 2005. We made a survey of literature, integrating the data of developmental psychology clinical psychology, health psychology, psychiatry and neurobiology, and personal prior research results. With the help of these analyses we drew out the structural, cognitive and behavioral variables to be included in a pretest- posttest design. At the same time, the mathematical background of some non parametrical statistical procedures for small samples, respectively non metrical data, was investigated and the suitability of these procedures for our project was tested.

Some pertinent adaptations were proposed. The fundamental research in mathematics and statistics went on all over the time of the study, as well as they validation of our rating scales and observational frames. The second stage of the study, i.e. the action-research, was focused on the application of arts therapies in the different institutions, schools and hospitals participating to the project. The action- research finished in August 2008. The evaluation of the changes induced by arts therapies or arts psychotherapies was made with the following sub-groups: highly gifted underachievers, pupils failing at school because of their psycho-social background; psychiatric patients suffering from depression, social phobia, eating disorders, personality disorders, complex posttraumatic states, drug addiction, alcoholism; elderly people confronted to the crisis of 3rd age and geriatric patients suffering from several degrees of dementia or neurodegenerative diseases, patients with whom the process of aging is superimposed to a preexisting psychosis or handicap.

The arts therapeutic process was studied in depth and the possibilities and limits of arts therapies and arts psychotherapies were discussed. Theoretical modelizations opening tracts for future research were extracted from the data.

The final conference, called:” Exploring Changes”, took place in June 2009, A book containing representative studies, “Applications de l’artthérapie. Approche clinique et expérimentale intégrée” (see above) was published in Luxembourg in spring. On invitation of the director of the Public Service Review “ Science and Technology “ , a synthesis of the research project FNR o2/ 05/ 14 will be published in issue 5 .
