Enriched high-pressure oxygen (EHPO) gas has many industrial and healthcare applications. Stored at high-pressure (HP) and purity levels (> 99 %), EHPO is transported via pressure regulators (PRs) to safely reduce the HP of oxygen (> 200 bar) to a lower pressure (< 5 bar) in industrial piping. Ignition events occur when an upstream valve is opened to let EHPO flow to the PR. The flow is adiabatically compressed producing rapid surge in pressure and temperature causing ignition. The proposal aims to use an experimental – CFD approach to study EHPO flow in PR-piping systems. An oxygen test facility will be built for this purpose at the University of Luxembourg and CFD simulations will be done using ANSYS FLUENT solver. This approach will enable understanding of the flow phenomena to identify the ignition triggering mechanisms. Thus the proposal’s objective is to research EHPO flow phenomena induced ignition in industrial PR-piping systems and to advance the research in this field.
