Numerous materials and structures are conglomerates of slender bodies – e.g., fibers, struts, yarns or wires. Computational models predict how these conglomerates mechanically perform in virtual prototypes, which ensure a more time- and cost-effective development phase. However, existing models lack the efficiency and robustness to simulate the full product: only small domains can be investigated. The aim of this project is to transform the models to increase their accuracy, robustness, and efficiency. To achieve this aim, we will focus on three currently unsolved challenges:(1)Accurate and efficient mechanical modeling of slender bodies,(2)Robust contact between the slender bodies,(3)Efficient homogenization of conglomerates of slender bodies. The computational framework will be experimentally validated on metal ropes and steel-chords by Kiswire Int.
