The principal research motivation of this FNR AFR-PPP project is to develop innovative spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-based vessel monitoring and route prediction methods in the domain of Maritime Surveillance (MS). The use of SAR images in MS has the potential for closing the data gaps associated with established cooperative vessel reporting systems. In this general context, highly relevant research questions emerged from recent evolutions in terms of advanced imaging capabilities of SAR sensors and higher sampling rates of new satellite constellations. The proposed project intends advancing MS by unlocking the full potential of satellite EO for large scale, systematic and rapid vessel detection and trajectory monitoring. The project will be conducted at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) in collaboration with the Luxembourgish private company LuxSpace. Taking advantage of a private-public partnership of skilled experts in microwave remote sensing, MS and high performance computing available in Luxembourg, this project addresses the following research objectives:-Improvement of EO–based vessel monitoring systems using EU collaborative data with a special focus on detecting small size non-cooperative targets. -An advanced SAR-based data analytics methodology for the monitoring and prediction of a vessel’s velocity and trajectory.
